I can't think of a better way to celebrate the holidays than with a festive platter loaded with cheese and fresh fruit. This simple, stunning idea is perfect as an appetizer for Christmas lunch or New Year's Eve dinner, bringing a joyful, festive touch to your table.

To put it together, I layered cubes of different cheeses with red and green grapes, topped off with a cheese star. It's light, delicious, and takes just minutes to arrange without any fuss in the kitchen.

Prep: 15 minServes: 6

Ingredients

  • Block of mild cheese
  • Block of mature or sharp cheese
  • Block of smoked cheese
  • Block of red cheese (for the star)
  • Black or red grapes
  • Green or white grapes
  • Fresh mint (or rosemary / thyme to taste)

Step by step

  1. 1Cut the different cheeses into uniform cubes. From a slice of red cheese, cut out a star shape to crown the tree.
  2. 2Wash the grapes thoroughly and dry them well with kitchen paper.
  3. 3Assemble the tree on a large platter or wooden board, arranging horizontal rows from narrow to wide (or starting from the wide base upwards): mild cheese, dark grapes, sharp cheese, green grapes, smoked cheese, and dark grapes.
  4. 4Place the cheese star at the very top and tuck sprigs of fresh mint, rosemary, or thyme into the gaps to resemble pine branches.

Tips and tricks

You can use a small star-shaped cookie cutter to make sure the tree topper looks neat and sharp.

Using seedless grapes makes nibbling much more pleasant and hassle-free for your guests.

Build the tree directly on the serving board or platter you plan to bring to the table so you don't have to move it once assembled.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prepare the cheese and grape tree in advance?

Yes, you can arrange it on the board a couple of hours ahead. Cover it securely with plastic wrap and keep it in the fridge until ready to serve.

What fresh herbs work best for garnish?

I love using fresh mint, but fresh rosemary or thyme are wonderful too because they look just like miniature pine branches.

What other cheeses can I use on the board?

Any firm cheese that holds its shape when cubed will work great—try Gouda, Emmental, Cheddar, or a mild semi-cured Manchego.
