Today we're making our no-added-sugar orange marmalade, a homemade recipe sweetened with dates and a touch of ginger that we love on toast. We also make the most of the orange peel to give it an extra burst of aroma and add chia seeds to thicken it naturally. With just a few simple ingredients, we fill our jars with sunshine and keep them in the fridge.

Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you'll need for this recipe

  • 5 oranges
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 4 Medjool dates or 3 tablespoons homemade date syrup
  • Orange peel
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • Water
  • Raspberries (optional)

Step by step

Method

  1. 1Using a peeler, pare the zest from half an orange, chop it finely, and set aside.
  2. 2Peel the rest of the oranges, remove all the white pith, chop into pieces, and place in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. 3Add a glass of water, the chopped orange peel, and the dates.
  4. 4Cook over medium-low heat until the oranges and dates break down completely.
  5. 5Remove from the heat and mash the oranges gently with a fork.
  6. 6Add the raspberries and ground ginger.
  7. 7Stir well and return to the heat for 2min more until the liquid reduces.
  8. 8Take off the heat and stir in the chia seeds.
  9. 9Ladle into small jars and, once cooled, store in the fridge.
  10. 10All done! Our no-added-sugar orange marmalade is ready.

Extras

  1. 1Dates are wholesome and naturally sweet; you can swap them for liquid sweetener if you prefer, entirely up to you! Personally, I wouldn't trade dates for anything in the world.
