Banana Maki Sushi

Today I am making banana sushi, a simple afternoon snack coated with tahini and rolled in crunchy white and black sesame seeds. These banana makis are ready in just 10 minutes with zero cooking required: simply coat the fruit, roll it in seeds, and slice into rounds. I love how a few humble ingredients turn into such an eye-catching treat.

The tahini gives the sesame seeds something to cling to, and its nutty richness pairs so well with the natural sweetness of the banana. To slice them cleanly without squishing, I recommend choosing a banana that is ripe but still firm. One banana makes a lovely individual snack, or you can easily slice it up to share.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of banana is best for these makis?

Pick a banana that is ripe but still quite firm. If it is too soft, it will crush easily when brushing on the tahini or slicing it into rounds.

Can I swap the tahini for another nut butter?

Yes, almond butter or peanut butter both work nicely, though they will change the overall flavour. Just make sure the butter has a smooth, spreadable consistency that is not too runny so it coats the banana well.

Can I prepare banana sushi ahead of time?

It really is best made fresh, as sliced banana quickly browns and turns soft. If you need to make it slightly ahead, store it in an airtight container in the fridge and eat it within a few hours that same day.
