Today I'm making these peas with ham and mushrooms using wholewheat spaghetti, a fuss-free way to sort out lunch without complicating things in the kitchen. What I love about this recipe is that the pasta cooks right in the same pan with the other ingredients: it absorbs all the flavour from the broth and turns out beautifully juicy, without having to boil it separately.

This pasta with peas and ham is ready in 35 minutes and makes four servings, making it a great go-to for the weekly meal plan. You can make it with water or broth; I would hold off on adjusting the salt until the very end, since the serrano ham already brings plenty of flavour.

For more weeknight ideas, try my Pasta nests with mixed vegetables and ham and my Gnocchi with peas and ham, which use very similar flavours.

Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you'll need

  • 500g frozen peas
  • 200g mushrooms
  • 200g serrano ham
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 200g wholewheat spaghetti
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Pink salt
  • Water or broth

Step by step

Method

  1. 1In a deep frying pan, add a drizzle of olive oil and sauté the mushrooms with the finely chopped garlic.
  2. 2Once they start to soften, add the peas and stir well.
  3. 3When the peas are lightly cooked, add the ham.
  4. 4Cook for a couple of minutes, then cover with water or broth.
  5. 5Cover with a lid and let it cook for 5 minutes, then add the spaghetti and cook for the time indicated on the packet.
  6. 6All done! Our PASTA WITH PEAS, HAM, AND MUSHROOMS is ready to enjoy.

Extra tips

  1. 1Use broth instead of water if you prefer.
  2. 2If there is barely any liquid left when you add the pasta, splash in a little more, just enough to cook the spaghetti and keep everything nice and saucy.

Frequently asked questions

How much water or broth does the pasta need to cook in the pan?

Add enough liquid just to cover the ingredients and keep an eye on it while it cooks. If it looks too dry before the spaghetti is done, gradually stir in a little more hot water or broth so it doesn't stick.

How do I store leftover pasta with peas, ham, and mushrooms?

Pop it into an airtight container and into the fridge within two hours, and enjoy within 2 to 3 days. When reheating, add a splash of water or broth to bring back that saucy texture.

Can I make this recipe with gluten-free pasta?

Yes, just swap the wholewheat spaghetti for gluten-free pasta and follow the cooking time on the packet, keeping an eye on the liquid in the pan. Make sure your broth and ham are also certified gluten-free.
